Secretary Candidates

Catherine McLean

Hello, I'm Catherine McLean. Before I begin my explanation of why I should be secretary, I thought I would flesh out exactly what a club secretary does. So, a secretary for a school club is responsible for recording everything that is discussed in all of the meetings: all the decisions that are made, all the events that are planned, and everything else in between. Then the secretary is to take all of this information, confirm with the president, and make an agenda for the next meeting. Secretaries are supposed to assist the club president is staying organized. This is something I know I could do and that is why I know I would do an awesome job as secretary. Also, I love the Bluffton community. I moved to Bluffton two years ago from Port Wentworth which is right outside of Pooler. In Port Wentworth, there were no opportunities for anyone to become involved in the community, so I was completely surprised when I moved here to Bluffton. There was an abundance of community programs and organizations that I could become involved in. I immediately began volunteering at Heroes on Horseback and have been ever since. Working at Heroes showed me just how extraordinary the Bluffton community is and I hope that everyone would give back to it in one way or another. Being secretary of Interact would provide me with the platform and the confidence to go out and encourage the students of Bluffton High School to become involved in their awesome community.

Speech / General Points

Good afternoon. My name is Perla Rodriguez. I am a junior and I am running for Interact secretary.

I am a member of National Honors Society, as well as a leader in Bobcat Bilingual Ambassadors which is a club with the purpose of providing assistance to students that are new to Bluffton High School and that speak very little to no English. I've also had the opportunity to be a part of the Zonta Club and Patrol Club.

-I moved here four years ago from Puerto Rico.

I'm sure many of you ave head about Hurricane Maria back in September. It was really sad to hear about the conditions they lived in for the following months.

-People were waiting hours in line just to gas, food, or water/

-Some families had absolutely no contact with each other.

-Because of the waste and the branches, many villages had no access to the rest of the community. They had no access to water or food or medical help.

-Some people were so desperate they would hold others at gunpoint and as for gas or food or water.

-However, I saw something greater arise. The whole island was coming together as one.

-People were going out of their homes to figure out ways to filter water, or distribute food. Kids were raising money to buy and distribute solar lamps and hand operate washing machines.

-The people were building Puerto Rico back up with their bare hands, and that is the type of potential I see in Interact.

-I believe that Interact can come together as one to reach out and shape the Bluffton and Bobcat community into what we know it can be.

-Us students hold the key to our own future and the future of out society.

-Whether you are here to get hours, or you are here because you are truly passionate about giving back, I believe the Interact experience will help you continue to develop into more powerful, open-minded, giving adults.

-As the Interact secretary I hope to make that process as easy flowing and organized as possible.
